Control of Congress calculator

Try hypothetical seat allocations for the next Congress. Enter Democratic, Republican, and other seats in each chamber to see the arithmetic. These are your inputs, not ElectionTracker forecasts or live returns.

Blank by default

No simulated seats are assigned until you enter them. You can optionally load a dated snapshot of the current Congress for comparison; that snapshot is not a prediction for January 2027.

House of Representatives

435 voting seats in the chamber; 218 seats for an absolute majority of all seats.

United States Senate

100 seats total. Independents are displayed separately; caucus affiliation is not assumed.

What these numbers do and do not mean

A filled-in scenario shows arithmetic only. A Senate chamber with 50 votes on each side may be organized according to the vice president's constitutional tie-breaking role and applicable rules; not every Senate action uses the same voting threshold. House vacancies can change the number needed for a majority of members actually voting, while this calculator uses 218 of 435 as its fixed full-membership benchmark.
